43 www.pdop.org Swimming Program Curriculum Begins this Summer! A new swim instruction program is coming to our pools this summer! We adopted the internationally recognized Starfish Aquatics Institute's swim program curriculum to our Swim Academy Curriculum. StarTots Ages 6 month-36 Months Start Here! StarTots must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver for their lessons. StarTots fosters comfort to children in the water, while training parents and caregivers in water safety. StarTots will be broken into two levels, StarTots 1 and StarTots 2. StarTot Benchmarks (Levels) • StarTot 1 – Trust & Comfort, Body Positions • StarTot 2 – Air Recovery & Rollover, Forward Movement Swim School Ages 3-13 Start Here! In order to set students up for success, rather than signing up for a specific level, students will register for their age appropriate Swim School. Swim School will be broken down to 3-5 and 6-13 years of age. Students will learn through experimental activities, allowing them to explore the water in a safe, creative, and comfortable environment. On the first day of class, students will be divided into White, Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green groups based on the Swim School benchmarks. As soon as a student is able to successfully complete the benchmark for their color, they will move to the next color whether that is day 2 or day 5 of lessons. In theory, a swimmer could pass multiple benchmarks (levels) in one session of classes. Children and adults all progress at different rates, with our transition to Starfish, students will be able to work at their own pace and feel more successful. Swim School Benchmarks (Levels) • Swim School White – Trust and Submersion • Swim School Red – Body Position and Air Recovery • Swim School Yellow – Forward Movement • Swim School Blue – Body Rotation • Swim School Green – Integrated Movement Adult & Youth Swim Lessons Starfish Swim Lessons aquatics / swimming Pass Swim School? Next Step is Stroke School! Like StarTots and Swim School, students work toward safety and skill benchmarks. Once both benchmarks are achieved, they will move to the next level. Stroke School Levels will fine tune technique and proficiency of strokes. Stroke School Levels • Stroke School White – Freestyle, Introduction to Backstroke • Stroke School Red – Backstroke, Introduction to Butterfly • Stroke School Yellow – Butterfly • Stroke School Blue – Breaststroke Adult Swim Lessons (14+) is adults-only class is for those with a wide variety of swim abilities looking to learn how to swim or become more proficient. Participants will be split based on ability and goals, instruction will range from fundamental skills to stroke development. Private & Semi-Private Lessons Students will register for either private or semi-private swim lessons. Families will be contacted by the Program Supervisor or Swim Lesson Coordinator within 48 hours to obtain additional information and set up the first lesson. Lessons will occur during open swim times at either Rehm or Ridgeland Pools and will last 30 minutes. Questions?
