FUN + Fundamentals
e Park District of Oak Park is putting the fun back in hockey with a focus on
game play! We have aligned our program with Learn to Skate USA and USA
Hockey, the industry leaders. Our class offerings will now focus on three important
areas: skating, stick handling skills and FUN! e result will be stronger skaters
with the skills and training needed to play for the Ice Bears in the Northwest
Hockey League. And, we hope they will make friends, learn from their teammates
and develop a love for the sport.
Beginning skaters will learn to play with other students their own age. Beginning
levels focus on building a solid skating foundation. Once players graduate from
Mini Cub 2 or Mighty Cub 2, they should consider adding Skills and Drills (which
teaches additional stick handling and skating skills) and Power Skating (which
concentrates on speed and agility) to their repertoire. Additionally, enrollment
in Mighty 3 and 4 includes registration in the Ice Bears Prep League - a weekly
scrimmage where players can test their skills and learn more about hockey rules
and etiquette. Participation in all three is encouraged, but if time is a restriction,
players can alternate sessions between Skills and Drills and Power Skating to work
toward requirements needed to join Ice Bears.
