Working with LEGO® Education Kits and under the guidance of an instuctor, participants will create working models of simple machines to understand some of the basic concepts of engineering and science. They will learn about working and application of levers, pulleys, gears, axels and wheels etc. These hands-on activities create understanding of "how things work", which develops aptitude for engineering and promotes learning in STEM. The program stimulates creativity and provides a supportive environment for its exploration, as well as promoting social skills. Min 6/Max 12 LEGO Innovations Lab (Ages 8 - 12) Supervisor: Kate Sniegowski Bring forth the skills you have acquired through experimenting with LEGOs over the years! In this class, participants will bring together their wealth of lego-experience, academic learning in science and math to solve technology-related problems of simple working machines. Participants will further experiment with their ideas and make working models to demonstrate to the class. Each team of two children will have a complete LEGO Engineering Kit and motor assembly to motorize the models they create. Min 6/Max 12 Checkmate Chess (Ages 5 - 12) Supervisor: Kate Sniegowski No previous knowledge of chess is necessary: players of all levels are welcome. Each class will consist of a fun interactive teaching period and guided practice time. Both new and returning participants will get to the next level under the guidance of an experienced Chess Scholars coach. Children will have an opportunity to test for a Chess Belt® under a unique Chess Scholars system patterned after martial arts belts. There will also be a chess competition with prizes at the end of the session! Min 5/Max 20 3D Digital Art Studio (Ages 10 - 13) Supervisor: Kate Sniegowski Want to walk in the footsteps of Walt Disney ... the innovator in animation and the winner of seven Emmy Awards? Want to do an 'Aladdin' or a 'Fantasia' of your own? Young 3D pioneers will learn how to work with dynamic software to turn their imaginations into 3D animated creations using an assortment of characters, lively and realistic backgrounds, and special effects. They will embellish their creations by adding sound effects and music of their choice. Children work in pairs consulting and sharing their thoughts and ideas. A copy of their work will be sent home with them on a flashdrive at the conclusion of the class. Min 6/Max 12 Non-lottery program Supervisor: Kate Sniegowski School's out, it's time for fun!
