18 SKATE ACADEMY About Skate Academy The Park District of Oak Park has adopted the Basic Skills program developed by U.S. Figure Skating. The Skate Academy program will serve the needs of skaters by promoting health and physical fitness through a safe and fun skating experience. Basic Skills follows a specific progression of skill levels designed to teach correct technique and enhance skating quality. Classes are available for ages 3.5 through adults. Registration Information Students who are currently skating at other ice arenas should find their current level listed in parenthesis and register for the corresponding Basic Skills level. A level comparison chart is available on-line and with Customer Service to assist in finding the correct level. Participants who are new to figure skating lessons should sign up for the level 1 in their age group. The Park District of Oak Park Skate Academy reserves the right to move participants to the correct level based on program standards. Level Evaluation Day These sessions are perfect for those not sure what level to register for as each level has skill requirements. This session will help determine what level is best for each skater based on their abilities. After working with skaters on the ice, instructors will provide a level recommendation for registration. • Thurs. August 14, 2:00-3:00pm, Ages 14-18 • Tues, August 19, 2:00-3:00pm, Ages 3.5-13 • Thurs, August 21 2:00-3:00pm, Ages 3.5-13 Practice, Practice, Practice! Practice sessions are offered all students registered in the Skate Academy program at no additional charge. Ice Skating is a fun but difficult sport and practice is key to improvement and advancing. Practice sessions are offered to all students registered in the Skate Academy program at no additional charge. These sessions are not supervised by staff. Sept. 8 – Jan. 31 (a separate schedule will be used for holiday breaks) No ice 11/27-29. • Tuesday (Half Ice): 3:45-4:15pm Basic 1-8 • Thursday (Full Ice): 3:00-3:45pm Basic 1-8, Free Skate 1 and Up • Saturday (Full Ice): 11:10-11:25am Basic 1-8 • Saturday (Full Ice): 12:35-12:45pm Free Skate 1 and Up Freestyle Sessions Freestyle ice time is for skaters who are looking for additional time to practice their skills individually or with a coach. These sessions are available only to those skaters registered in the Skate Academy program. Basic 8 and below may use the ice when accompanied by a coach. Skaters, coaches and parents are expected to follow all freestyle rules and etiquette (available on- line). Schedule starts September 1st. Fee: $10 or by pre-paid pass • Monday: 5:45 – 9:00 am • Tuesday: 7:30 – 8:30 pm • Wednesday: 7:15 – 9:00 am • Friday: 5:45 – 9:00 am • Saturday: 7:15 – 9:15 am Figure Skating Coordinator Cathy Brown skate_academy@pdop.org Advance Skate Clinic: Free Skate 1 through Advanced Jump & Spin Supervisor: Jackie Sturtz Get some extra time practicing your skating skills at this half day clinic! This clinic features several difference sections including power, jumps, spins, interpretive and off-ice work. Skaters will be dividied by level . Min 10/Max 25 Intermediate Skate Clinic: Basic 5 through Free Skate 3 Supervisor: Jackie Sturtz Spend some extra time on the ice! This clinic is designed to provide extra time on specific skills to futher develop each skater. Sections will include stroking, edges, extensions, turns, jumps, spins and creative spirals and lunges as well as some off-ice work. Skaters will be divided by level. Min 10/Max 25 Style & Creative Clinic: High School Skaters Supervisor: Jackie Sturtz This cliinic will bring out the creative side in each skater. Skaters will spend some time working on style, spins and jumps. Time will also be spent using fun equipment to work on creative spirals and moves. Daisys, Brownies, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scout classes now available! Sessions include free skate rental, 45 minutes on ice instruction, 15 minutes off-ice instruction.
