86 ADULT SPECIAL INTEREST Vegetable Gardening Made Easy Supervisor: Patti Staley Learn about the easiest veggies for beginners, how to read seed packets, how to start seeds, companion planting techniques, how to transplant seedlings, and what to do once your seeds start growing. Leave this workshop with a plan for your garden and some started seeds. Feel free to bring your own seeds for a seed exchange at the end of the workshop. Note: Registration is required one week prior to the workshop to allow for supplies to be purchased. Min 5/Max 20 Growing Your Own Mushrooms Supervisor: Patti Staley You can grow your own mushrooms at home! Workshop participants will prepare and inoculate logs with shiitake mushrooms, learn to care for and grow the mushroom log, and learn how to harvest their mushroom crop. This is an active workshop where you will be using power tools, getting dirty, and doing some lifting. Take home two inoculated logs to start your own mushroom farm. Please wear appropriate clothing for this workshop and bring work gloves, if you have them. Materials cost is included in the class fee. Terrariums duplicate conditions found in gardens, are easy to assemble, and a great way to teach young children to observe nature. Build your own terrarium to take home! Home Landscape Sustainability Supervisor: Patti Staley Landscape sustainability or "greening" your landscape is more than just choosing the appropriate plants. How you design, water, fertilize, control pests, and manage the appearance of your landscape are all factors to consider for your home landscape. Come learn about these aspects and more. Feel free to bring pictures or sketches of your landscape. Nature and History Travelogues Supervisor: Patti Staley Sit back, relax, and take a pictorial trip through nature and history with James Rowan as he guides you through the parks and wildlands of Illinois, the Midwest, the United States, and the world. Through spectacular photography and first-person stories, you'll see the people, places, and history that makes natural areas first-class travel destinations. Min 5/Max 30 New! Manager's Tour of the Conservatory Supervisor: Patti Staley See the Conservatory as you've never seen it before. Hear about the history, mechanics, operations, and hidden plant gems of the Oak Park Conservatory. See areas of the Conservatory normally off-limits to the typical visitor. Min 5/Max 10 New! Seed Starting with Sugar Beet Co-op Supervisor: Poppy Vogel From simple, window-sill starters for a few plants, to more complex systems with artificial lights, and trays of many plants, you can save money, and get a head start on the kitchen garden. Join Sugar Beet Schoolhouse for this hands- on workshop. Participants will learn the basics of successful seed starting and will leave with everything needed for a great start to the growing season. Min 10/Max 35 New! Soil Prep & Cool Weather Crops Supervisor: Poppy Vogel The key to a successful growing season starts with well-prpared soil. In this handson workshop led by Sugar Beet Schoolhouse, you'll learn how to aerate and amend soil using natural compost and fertilizers. Participants will also learn how to successfully direct seed cool weather crops such as peas, spinach, chard , and radishes, just in time for the growing season.
