Hockey Skates The Park District of Oak Park Hockey Academy recommends that first time skaters use figure skates in their intro- ductory hockey classes and transition to hockey skates once the skater is com- fortable moving on the ice, typically after one or two sessions. Figure skates are designed with a longer blade to distribute a skater's weight more evenly to develop proper balance which is more conducive to beginning hockey players. In contrast, hockey skates have a more steeply curved blade and require a slight- ly different motion than figure skates that can be difficult to master without prior practice. Since skating is the core skill to ice hockey, it is important to establish a firm skill base with the emphasis on proper skill acquisition, even if that means using figure skates initially!
