The Skate Academy program will serve the needs of skaters by promoting health and physical fitness through a safe and fun skating experience. Basic Skills follows a specific progression of skill levels designed to teach cor- rect technique and enhance skating quality. Classes are available for ages 3.5 through adults. Registration Information New to our Ice Arena from another rink? Unsure what level to sign up for? A level comparison chart is available on-line and with Customer Service to assist in finding the correct level. Participants who are new to figure skating lessons should sign up for the level 1 in their age group. The Park District of Oak Park Skate Academy reserves the right to move participants to the correct level based on program standards. Practice, Practice, Practice for ALL LEVELS! Practice sessions are offered for all students registered in the Skate Academy program at no additional charge. Ice Skating is a fun but difficult sport and practice is key to improvement and advancing. Practice sessions are offered to all students registered in the Skate Academy program at no additional charge. These sessions are not supervised by staff. Sept. 8 – Jan. 31 (a separate schedule will be used for holiday breaks) No ice 11/26-29. • Tuesday (Half Ice): 3:15-4:15P • Thursday (Full Ice): 3:00-4:00P • Thursday (Full Ice): 5:20-5:45P • Saturday (Full Ice): 11:10-11:25A • Saturday (Full Ice): 12:20-12:45P Figure Skates Vs. Hockey Skates The Park District of Oak Park Hockey Academy recommends that first time skaters use figure skates in their introductory hockey classes and transition to hockey skates once the skater is comfortable moving on the ice, typically after one or two sessions. Figure skates are designed with a longer blade to distribute a skater's weight more evenly to develop proper balance which is more conducive to beginning hockey players In contrast, hockey skates have a more steeply curved blade and require a slightly different motion than figure skates that can be difficult to master without prior practice. Since skating is the core skill to ice hockey, it is important to establish a firm skill base with the emphasis on proper skill acquisition, even if that means using figure skates initially! Home School Classes Classes offered during the day on Tuesday are perfect for those parents looking for convenient and fun daytime activities for their children.
