5 www.pdop.org Park Renewal Projects Maple Park Renovation Project A major section of Maple Park will be closed beginning July 5 as the park undergoes a major renovation. is project will include ballfield improvements, playground replacement and relocation to the east along Maple Avenue, construction of a picnic shelter adjacent to the playground, new climbing structures in between the ballfields, and new looped pathways. Additionally, lines will be added to the current tennis courts for pickle ball and park landscaping will be enhanced. is project is being funded through the Park District's Capital Improvement Plan. In 2013, a $400,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources was awarded to the Park District for this project. is grant was suspended in 2015. e Maple Park Renovation Project is expected to be completed by the end of 2016. CHENEY MANSION SITE PLAN REVISIT You are invited to provide your input about the grounds that surround Cheney Mansion as the Park District reviews the Mansion's current site plan at a community meeting on Tuesday, June 14 at 7pm at Cheney Mansion. e current master plan was completed in 2009 and since that time, the Cheney Greenhouse was restored, a path was created to improve access to the first floor and to create access from the front to the back patio of the home. With a generous donation from a former Cheney neighbor, the Woodland Waterfall Garden located in the southeast corner of the grounds was also restored. e Cheney Mansion grounds are open to the public year round unless a private function is taking place. Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, June 11. Austin Garden Environmental Education Center Grand Opening Please join us for the grand opening of the Austin Gardens Environmental Education Center (AGEEC) on Saturday, June 11 at 10am featuring entertainment, recyclable cras, a scavenger hunt, and of course a tour of this Platinum LEED-designed facility. Also, bring your lawn and tree care questions for our staff experts who will be on hand to share their knowledge with you. If you enjoy Yoga, please come by from 9 to 9:45am for a free class prior to the ribbon cutting ceremony. e AGEEC is a showcase facility for sustainable design featuring a geo-thermal system, solar panels, a green roof, storm water harvesting, rain gardens, and an energy efficient building envelope and mechanical systems. It will be home to sustainability workshops and classes and will also host summer camps and a nature-based preschool program. We hope to see you on June 11 in Austin Gardens! e Park District repurposed diseased trees cut down at Rehm Park into trim wood for the Austin Gardens Environmental Education Center. Longfellow Park To preserve water, one of nature's most precious resources, the Park District is installing an above ground cistern at Longfellow Park. e splash pad at Longfellow Park uses about 12, 000 gallons of water per week and it takes about 10,000 gallons of water per week to irrigate the Longfellow Park field. Rainwater and water from the splash pad will be captured in the cistern and repurposed for field irrigation. e cistern will be installed this spring in time for the Longfellow splash pad to begin operation on Memorial Day weekend. A similar cistern is also planned for Field Park.
