Pickleball at Barrie Six dedicated pickleball courts will open in May on the sport court next to Barrie Center. ese courts are the first dedicated pickleball courts in our parks system and were installed in response to requests from numerous local avid pickleball players. Played by all ages, pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States combining many elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong. e Barrie Center pickleball courts are open 8:00A-8:00P daily. Carroll Center Addition Construction is set to begin in August to add two classrooms onto the south end of Carroll Center to meet the growing need for aerschool and preschool programs in the Oak Park community. e playground currently in this location will be removed and a new playground will be constructed to the east of Carroll Center. e Park District is currently awaiting word on grant funding which would provide for several sustainability features in the addition. is project, part of the District's Capital Improvement Plan, is scheduled to be completed by spring 2020. New Play Feature at Rehm Pool e sand play area at Rehm Pool was replaced this past winter with a toddler water play area. is project eliminated the District's problem with sand clogging the pool filter and provides an exciting new feature for our younger audience. Sustainability at the Oak Park Conservatory anks to the 1,000+ Oak Park residents who made sustainability pledges in fall 2018, four earth-friendly projects have been completed at the Oak Park Conservatory in partnership with Green Mountain Energy Sun Club. • A 24.5kW solar field on the Conservatory's roof is offsetting 36,500 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere per year, the equivalent of 190 full-sized trees. • Five cisterns are repurposing up to 4,500 gallons of rain water collected from the Conservatory roof to water plants on display at the Conservatory and grown for placement throughout our parks system. • A Compost Tea System is producing a natural fertilizer that provides superior plant nutrition for the Conservatory's plant life. • ree Working Honeybee Hives are now on display at the Conservatory. ese pollinators play a vital role in our agriculture.
