A response to the industrial era, it blended natural forms with man-made advances in architecture, design and manufacturing. In this class, you'll create hand- painted tiles using tube lining — a technique in which a design outline was created first and then filled in with color — is the definitive look of Art Nouveau. Op Art (short for Optical Art) is a movement that rose to popularity in the 1960s as a means of keeping the eyes busy. In this class, participants will create their own handheld "fidget spinners" as kinetic art — discs, gears, and designs that rotate around a center axis. When patterns and colors on multiple layers spin together, they can fool the eye and create colorful illusions. Take one for a spin! Age 7-Adult Res Fee $21 - Fee $26 Location: Dole Center - Studio 3 Cultural Creations: Pakistan Independence Day Sunday, Aug 14, 1:00-3:00P Celebrate the creation of the Pakistani nation and learn about their history. Participants will also learn about Truck Art and the colorful tradition of decorated trucks in Pakistan while creating their very own truck portraits. Age 7-Adult Res Fee $10 - Fee $13 Location: Dole Center - Studio 3 Light Catchers Friday, Aug 19, 6:00-8:00P e beauty of a painting lit from behind was compelling and unforgettable in the Middle Ages and still is today. Rather than using fragile glass or vitreous paint, this project introduces a means of creating transparent images using acrylic paint and medium. A painting is created on a piece of film, then lied away as an integral part of a new surface. It's similar to mono-printing, but in a clearly unique, unforgettable way. Paper coiling core is shaped and glued in layers in the same manner as a clay coil pot is constructed. Vibrant and fluid liquid watercolors can replicate patterns from the Papago, Navajo, and Apache cultures of Native America and Northern Mexico, or painted in contemporary, abstract, or representational styles. Age 8-Adult Res Fee $38 - Fee $51 Location: Dole Center - Multipurpose Room Paste Papers Friday, Aug 26, 3:00-6:00P Paste papers, one of the earliest forms of decorated paper, were used for both covers and end-papers in books from the late sixteenth and eighteenth century. e basic technique involves dampening a sheet of paper, coating it with colored paste, and then drawing designs through the paste. In this exciting workshop, participants will be introduced to paste and paper preparation, color mixing and the use of various patterning tools. Each participant will create at least 10 original designs on 8x10 cra paper. Supplies and handouts included. Books plus samples of vintage and contemporary designs will be on view with a brief discussion on the history of paste papers.
