5 PARK RENEWAL PROJECTS Longfellow Park Site Plan Review Please join the Park District on Tuesday, March 18 for a community meeting to review the Longfellow Park site plan and identify additional park improvements. The original Longfellow plan was developed in February 2007. In 2009 a major renovation of the park took place including the relocation of the creative play area and water feature, new pathways and the addition of a full-court basketball area. Future upgrades identified in the current site plan call for sports field improvements and tennis court reconstruction. Please join us and provide your thoughts regarding the future of Longfellow Park. Comprehensive Planning Process The Park District hired The Lakota Group, a firm specializing in Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation and Community Relations, to complete a Comprehensive Master Plan (CMP) which will set a course for the future of the Park District. A CMP was previously developed for the Park District 10 years ago. Most of the plan's recommendations have been completed including the development of site plans for all parks, the attainment of financial independence from the Village and a systematic approach to park and facility renewal stretching agency-wide. It is now time to once again take a long term view and determine our future priorities and projects. Cheney Mansion Greenhouse Project Renovation will begin on the Cheney Mansion greenhouse in March 2014 including replacement of glazing and related framing, restoration of the ventilation systems, a new concrete floor, masonry tuckpointing, and the addition of double doors on the northside of the greenhouse for easy access. Additionally a restroom will be added on the southside of the greenhouse and minor abatement work will be completed prior to the commencement of construction. Renovation is anticipated to be completed by Memorial Day to make this beautiful new venue on the Cheney Mansion grounds available for weddings and other private parties this summer and for use by residents and visitors when the grounds are open to the public. Ridgeland Common Recreation Complex (RCRC) The bleachers and windows are installed, the activity rooms, locker rooms, and offices are taking shape and the concrete slab, which will be transformed into the new ice rink, is currently being poured as part of the renovation of Ridgeland Common, the Park District's flagship recreation facility. The Park District is anxiously awaiting the completion of this project in June, just in time for the swim and skate season. When the Ridgeland Common Recreation Complex opens, the Paul Hruby Ice Arena will be open and will be officially a year-round operation. This year you can buy a swim and skate season pass. We are even offering a special "summer only" promotional skate pass just in case you want to try out your skating skills before you commit to an annual pass. Best of all, if you really like gliding around the rink, you can apply your 3-month pass towards the purchase of an annual skate pass. Check out page 41 for more details. SURVEYS TO BE SENT OUT IN APRIL - LOOK FOR YOURS IN THE MAIL! As part of the comprehensive planning process, a community needs assessment will be conducted in April via U.S. mail, telephone and email. If you are one of the residents who is randomly selected to receive a Park District survey, please complete it and return it to help us set a course for our future. Look for the opening of the Ridgeland Common Recreation Complex Dog Park and synthetic turf field this spring - visit www. pdop.org for details! Details on the Grand Opening of RCRC this summer coming soon!
