How you design, water, fertilize, control pests, and manage the appearance of your landscape are all factors to consider for your home landscape. Come learn about these aspects and more. Feel free to bring pictures or sketches of your landscape Min 6/Max 15 Chicken Health (Ages 18 & Up) Supervisor: Scott Stewart, PhD Are you interested in knowing how to care for your birds in an emergency situation? Better yet, what IS an emergency for a chicken?Come learn the signs of a sick bird, what to do to help her, and where to seek care if the situation is beyond your ability. Min 8/Max 30 Dividing Perennials (Ages 18 & Up) Supervisor: Scott Stewart, PhD We will learn which plants are suitable for division as well as when and how to divide them. Participants will then move outdoors for a hands- on demonstration in the perennial garden and each participant will take home a division from the Conservatory garden. Please dress for the weather and for gardening activity. Min 5/Max 15 Compost 101 (Ages 18 & Up) Supervisor: Scott Stewart, Ph.D. Learn what compost is, how it is created, and how to use it in our gardens, both indoor and outside. The discussion will cover the necessary ingredients, proper compost pile preparation and managing the ongoing process that creates gardeners' gold - rich, living humus. Bring some gloves and get involved in the work portion of the class. Min 5/Max 15 New Gardeners (Ages 16 & Up) Supervisor: Scott Stewart, Ph.D. For all those who'd love to garden but aren't sure where to start, here's a look at the basics: How plants work, what they need, what you will need, and what to expect. Whether you have a plot to grow in or just a pot, you'll have a chance to think about the kind of garden you can have in your first season and ask questions about what you need to do. Min 6/Max 30 Plant Stories (Ages 18 & Up) Supervisor: Scott Stewart, Ph.D. Every plant tells a story. Join us at the Oak Park Conservatory for a journey through some of history's most exciting, interesting, and unique plant stories. After sharing in these adventures, we will explore the conservatory's display houses for plants that speak to us, that tell us a story and begin telling that story through essay, story, or poem. Paper and writing instruments provided. Min 4/Max 10 Container Workshop (Ages 18 & Up) Supervisor: Scott Stewart, Ph.D. Join our popular container workshop to gain knowledge of designs and plant combinations to spark your outdoor containers. Participants will receive planting, care and maintenance tips that will keep your containers beautiful all summer. Everyone will take home a fully planted, outdoor container for your balcony or patio. Plants will be available for full sun or partial shade. Materials cost is included in the fee.
