What is modern art? Join us in conversations about iconic works of art from Greco, Roman, to Contemporary. Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month. We'll occasionally take trips to see special exhibits at the Art Institute, Contemporary Museum of Art and more (optional). This club is perfect for those who don't know much about art but want to learn more, or those who are passionate about art and want to talk about it with others. Discussion led by a resident art enthusiast. Drop-in participation welcome, but pre-registration is encouraged ($4 for Active Adult Members, $8 for all others). Min 1/Max 12 Book Worms (Ages 50 & Up) Supervisor: Kate Sniegowski Do you enjoy reading? Are you looking for a book group with whom to socialize? Join other book worms to discuss the Park District's book of the month. The Book Worms Book Club gathers at Longfellow Center to discuss a list of questions developed by the Park District staff, but you are encouraged to bring questions of your own! You may either pre-register or pay via cash or check upon arrival. Min 1/Max 12 Quilting Club (Ages 18 & Up) Supervisor: Kate Sniegowski Learn the skill of quilting with an expert. Start on a new project or continue on your existing one. This class is bound to free your creative side with quilters sharing patterns, projects and ideas. Great for quilters of all experience levels! Meetings will be held on the first and third Wednesday of the month. Drop in participation welcome, but pre-registration is encouraged (Class is $4 for Active Adult Members $8 for all others). Min 6/Max 20 Starved Rock Trip (Ages 50 & Up) Supervisor: Kate Sniegowski Join us on a Land & Water Cruise at Starved Rock in Utica, IL! The Trolley will take you to The Belle of the Rock, an authentic paddle wheel boat, where you will spend a leisurely hour enjoying the scenic Illinois river views. Trip also includes a hot buffet lunch at the Lodge and a narrated tour about local history aboard a Starved Rock Trolley with stops at the Starved Rock State Park Visitor Center and at The Illinois Waterway Visitor Center. Deadline for registration is May 6th. Min 12/Max 12 Wine & Cheese Social (Ages 50 & Up) Supervisor: Kate Sniegowski Enjoy an evening of tasting, socializing and trivia! The night begins among friends at 6pm when doors open at Cheney Mansion. Cheese, crackers and fruit will be available for you to sample. Get to know your wine and cheese before testing your knowledge during a wine and cheese based trivia game! This event will be sure to awake your palate. First glass of wine is free, additional drink tickets will be sold for $2. Enjoy the wonderful Hors d'oeuvers and wine, but make sure to take time to explore this beautiful 12,000 square foot mansion designed in 1913 by Charles E. White, Jr., a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. Min 20/Max 40 ADULT SPECIAL INTEREST Les Miserables Trip (Ages 50 & Up) Supervisor: Kate Sniegowski One of Broadway's most beloved musicals, "Les Miserables" is showing at the Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrance. Set in early 19th-century France, it is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread. Jean decides to break his parole and start his life anew after a kindly bishop inspires him by a tremendous act of mercy, but he is relentlessly tracked down by a police inspector. Along the way, Jean and a slew of characters are swept into a revolutionary period in France. Please keep in mind lunch is not a part of the show. Dole pick up at 12:15 pm; Fox Pick up at 12:30pm.
