Min 4/Max 7 Class does not meet: 07/04 Figure Skates Vs. Hockey Skates The Park District of Oak Park Hockey Academy recommends that first time skaters use figure skates in their intro- ductory hockey classes and transition to hockey skates once the skater is comfortable moving on the ice, typically after one or two sessions. Figure skates are designed with a longer blade to distribute a skater's weight more evenly to develop proper balance which is more conducive to beginning hockey players. In contrast, hockey skates have a more steeply curved blade and require a slightly different motion than figure skates that can be difficult to master without prior practice. Since skating is the core skill to ice hockey, it is important to establish a firm skill base with the emphasis on proper skill acquisition, even if that means using figure skates initially! Purchase your seasonal pool pass or ice arena year round pass by May 9 and save $10! See page 13 for details. QUESTIONS? We're here to help!
