Acrylic paint dries to form a flexible and durable material that resembles a skin or thick fabric. In this workshop, we'll cut the acrylic into pieces and work it into a mosaic pattern on a glass object. Each participant will leave with their very own. Age 7-Adult Res Fee $22 - Fee $27 Location: Dole Center - Studio 3 Altered Penny Carpet Saturday, Jul 2, 10:00A-12:00P In the 1800s, many homes were decorated with "Penny Carpets" made from miss-matched fabric cut into circles. Patches were then layered and stitched together to make a large piece. Students create a penny carpet with fabric scraps. Each section is sewed to felt swatches, then joined to make a larger piece of art. Age 8-Adult Res Fee $15 - Fee $20 Location: Dole Center - Studio 3 Cultural Creations: Aboriginal Art Sunday, Jul 3, 1:00-3:00P Celebrate National Aboriginal and Islander Day learning about the native people of Australia and their incredible artwork derived from storytelling. Participants will create and take home a stylized Aboriginal Dot painting. Age 7-Adult Res Fee $10 - Fee $13 Location: Dole Center - Studio 3 Architectural Letter Saturday, Jul 9, 10:00A-12:00P Design and construct a 3-dimensional letter using one of your initials. e surface can be decorated with descriptive words and images that are personally meaningful and unique. Age 7-Adult Res Fee $18 - Fee $23 Location: Dole Center - Studio 3 Art in Motion Sunday, Jul 10, 1:00-3:00P In this workshop, participants create a simple sculpture around a rotary hub with stacked wooden beads and so wire. When a direct air current is applied to metallic paper "sails" (blow on it!), the sculpture blades turn gently. Age 7-Adult Res Fee $16 - Fee $21 Location: Dole Center - Studio 3 Assemblage Art Friday, Jul 15, 6:00-8:00P In this particular lesson plan, students will mimic the work of Louise Nevelson, known for her abstract sculptures made from cast-off pieces of wood — actual street "throwaways" — uniformly coated with black or white spray paint. Students will create their own assemblages from wood pieces and other cast- off objects on a panel. Great for vases, pencil holders, or simply decoration. Age 7-Adult Res Fee $15 - Fee $20 Location: Dole Center - Studio 3 Boxes Like Bontecou's Sunday, Jul 17, 1:00-3:00P In the mid-1950s and 1960s, Lee Bontecou was part of a generation of artists that looked beyond traditional fine art materials and transformed everyday objects in their work. Using a box as a starting point, participants turn one of the world's most everyday materials - cardboard - into multi- media sculpture. Age 7-Adult Res Fee $21 - Fee $26 Location: Dole Center - Studio 3 Hand-Colored History Sunday, Jul 24, 1:00-3:00P Connect with historical studies of your own community. Visit your library to find photos that you can scan of buildings, places and people that were important in the development of your town's history. We'll take photocopy images from your own family history. en using colored pencils on black and white prints, we'll bring those images to life. Age 7-Adult Res Fee $18 - Fee $23 Location: Dole Center - Studio 3 Mehndi Art Gloves Friday, Jul 29, 6:00-8:00P Mehndi is the artistic application of henna to the hands and feet. Intricate designs are applied in repeating patterns, paisley, sun shapes, animals and plants but Mehndi artists enjoy using their personal creativity and vision as well. We will use permanent marker and create radial designs while a glove is being worn. e sense of touch as the design is being created is an important part of the process. Age 7-Adult Res Fee $14 - Fee $19 Location: Dole Center - Studio 3 Middle-East Reflections Saturday, Jul 30, 10:00A-12:00P Welcome to Mid-Eastern art and design. e emphasis is on geometric patterns which occur throughout Islamic cultures. Some of these patterns represent objects found in nature; others demonstrate the beauty of order and symmetry. More than just ornamentation, these patterns were created to transform the object they adorn into something uncommon and infinite. Using mirror mosaics and Islamic geometric patterns participants will create a mosaic of their own design with metallic, reflective materials arranged on solid base.
