38 Coming In Summer: HOCKEY ACADEMY & SKATE ACADEMY About Skate Academy Park District of Oak Park introduces Basic Skills Figure Skating to be used by the Skate Academy at Ridgeland Common. This program was developed by U.S. Figure Skating, the national governing body of figure skating in the United States. The Basic Skill program was developed to serve the needs of both recreational and competitive skaters by promoting health and physical fitness through a safe and fun skating experience. This is achieved by teaching correct technique and enhancing the quality of ice skating at all levels. Summer Session*: July 8 – August 30 Classes will be offered once a week for eight weeks on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Specialty classes will be held on Thursday afternoons. More ice time is also offered through our figure skating camps! For more information see page 18. Registration information will be available with the summer brochure. *tentative based on construction timeline Skate Academy Levels: Snowplow Sam (Levels 1-3): Ages 3-5 The Snowplow Sam levels are designed to help the preschool age skater develop preliminary coordination and strength necessary to maneuver on the ice. Time in Snowplow Sam will allow preschool children to become comfortable on the ice. Basic Skills (Levels 1-8): Ages 6+ The "Basic Skills" are the fundamentals of the sport. These eight levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves: forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, three turns, and mohawks. Upon completion of the Basic Skills 1-8 levels, skaters will have the basic knowledge of the sport, enabling them to advance to the more specialized areas of skating. Free Skate (Levels 1-6): Ages 6+ Free Skate levels are designed to give skaters a strong foundation on which to build their skills. Each Free Skate level is divided into four sections: Moves in the Field, Dance/Footwork, Spins, and Jumps. These levels introduce more spins and jumps as well as combinations. Bronze, Silver, and Gold: Ages 6+ These high levels are for skaters who have successfully tested out of Free Skate 6 and want to take their skating to the next level. These levels will work on more advanced jumps, spins and power exercises. About Hockey Academy Introducing a revamped youth hockey program! The hockey academy is designed to teach the fundamentals of hockey skating. Skaters will learn hockey skating skills teaching them to balance and agility on the ice before progressing to stick and puck skills and game play. Summer Session*: July 9 – August 31 Classes will be offered once a week for eight weeks on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons with some game time on Sunday afternoons. Hockey Academy Levels: Polar Cubs (levels 1-3): Ages 3-5 These levels will introduce hockey skating and skills to the preschool age group. The primary focus of these levels is to develop the coordination and strength necessary to move on the ice. Polar Cubs starts with basic hockey skating and progresses to introducing stick and puck skills. Jr. Bears (levels 1-3): Ages 6+ The Jr. Bears are for ages six and up to learn hockey skating and skill work. Players will learn to basics of hockey skating and work to increase agility and speed. Stick handling and puck skills are also incorporated into upper levels. Polar Bear Hockey League: This hockey league replaces the previous Maximum Development program. Participants of this program should first progress through the Polar Cubs or Jr. Bears program. Polar Bear Hockey League will introduce positioning and game play while developing stick and puck skills through practices and scrimmages. Sportsmanship, team play, and hockey skills will be emphasized in this program. Participants will be divided into teams during the first class session. Spring Ice Hockey Information In partnership with Franklin Park Ice Arena Adult hockey will be offered for intermediate and advanced players at the Franklin Park Ice Arena this spring. This program will feature a half an hour of instruction and drills followed by a full hour of scrimmage. This is a no check, no slap shot program that focuses on safe, fun, competitive hockey. Unsportsmanlike conduct of any kind will not be tolerated. A dark and light jersey should be brought each week. This league competes against other organizations as part of the North West Hockey League (NWHL). Players are divided by birth year and evaluated based on skill level to produce equal teams at each level where all players receive equal and balanced ice time. Each team will receive on average a power skate, a practice, and a game a week.
